An Italian military base in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq was struck by a rocket overnight, though no casualties were reported, Italy’s defense authorities said Thursday.
The Italian Ministry of Defense said the rocket hit its base in Erbil, confirming that all Italian soldiers stationed there are safe. The ministry added that Defense Minister Guido Crosetto remains in constant contact with senior military commanders to monitor the situation.
In a separate statement, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Italian troops took shelter in protective bunkers during the attack and confirmed that all personnel are safe.
According to official defense information, Italy currently has around 300 troops deployed in Erbil, where they are tasked with training Kurdish security forces in the autonomous Kurdistan Region.
