The Supreme Council of Antiquities started to renovate a total number of 29 statues of the ram-headed sphinxes located in Karnak Temple Complex in Luxor, Upper Egypt.
In statements on Saturday, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Mostafa Waziri said this is considered the biggest renovation project of its kind in five decades.
"The project was launched after the transfer of four statues to Tahrir Square in Cairo; their poor condition necessitated a restoration process since it was made about 50 years ago with inappropriate materials such as cement and brick," Waziri added.
He noted that three statues had been renovated while the other 25 are waiting for their turn.
