Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that Moscow paid just over $1 billion last year to the Wagner armed group, which last week organized an insurrection that quickly ended.
"The state paid the Wagner Group 86,262 billion rubles (about a billion dollars) in salaries to fighters and incentive bonuses between May 2022 and May 2023 only," Putin said during a televised meeting with law enforcement authorities.
Over the past two days, Russia has witnessed a state of security instability, after Wagner's commander declared rebellion against the Russian army.
