Putin Offers Condolences to Indonesia's President over Earthquake Victims

Russia's President Vladimir Putin offered his condolences to his Indonesian counterpart, Joko Widodo over the deadly 5.6-magnitude earthquake in West Java province.

Putin’s message to Widodo was published on the Kremlin’s website on Tuesday.

"Please accept my deepest condolences over the earthquake that caused numerous casualties and large-scale destruction in the West Java province. Please convey my words of heartfelt sympathy and support to the families and friends of the victims, and wishes for a speedy recovery to all those injured," the message reads.

Reuters reported earlier that the death toll in the earthquake that struck Indonesia on Monday reached 252. According to the Indonesian authorities, at least 377 people were injured and 31 are still missing.

Damage has been reported to more than 700 buildings so far, including homes, schools and hospitals.

The epicenter was 74 km southeast of the capital, Jakarta. According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Center, the earthquake was recorded at a depth of five km.
