On Saturday, the Russian President Vladimir Putin extended the embargo on Western food products that was imposed in 2014 in response to sanctions imposed by the Americans and Europeans.

Under the decree signed by Putin, the ban on importing food products from the European Union to Russia was extended until December 31, 2021.

These measures, which were taken in August 2014, include food products from countries that impose sanctions on Russia for its annexation of the Ukrainian Crimea peninsula in March of the same year, and its support for separatists in eastern Ukraine.

The embargo was extended five times in response to the extension of European economic sanctions on Russia.

At the end of June, the European Union decided to extend its economic sanctions against Russia for six months due to the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

The European Union does not recognize Russia's annexation of Crimea that took place in 2014, and describes this move as a "violation of international law."

Western sanctions, which affected all sectors of the economy in Russia, along with the collapse of oil prices, plunged Russia into its longest recession since Putin arrived in the Kremlin in 2000.

The Russian authorities say the sanction promotes the development of the subsidized national agricultural sector.
