On Saturday, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi inaugurated the new Bashteel Upper Egypt Train Station, a major transportation project to reduce the congestion at Cairo’s historic Ramses Station. This new station, designed to serve passengers on the Upper Egypt and Manashi train lines, is part of Egypt’s broader efforts to modernize its railway infrastructure and improve passenger flow.

The inauguration was attended by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transportation Kamel El-Wazir, and Minister of Health Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, alongside other ministers, governors, and senior officials.

The event also marked the launch of several other key transportation projects, including the new Kafr Dawoud-Sadat railway line and a modernization of the signaling system in Beni Suef.

The construction of Bashteel Station addresses the growing need for enhanced transportation capacity, particularly for passengers from Upper Egypt. The station will help alleviate the pressure on Ramses Station, Cairo’s main railway hub, which was built in 1854 when Egypt's population was just 4 million. Today, with a population of over 104 million, there is an urgent need for new infrastructure to accommodate increasing passenger numbers.

Strategic Location and Size: Bashteel Station is situated in the Giza governorate, occupying an area of 239,000 square meters (around 57 acres), making it three times larger than Ramses Station.

It is located at a key transportation hub, bordered by major routes such as the Kamel Amer Axis, Sudan Street, and the July 26th Corridors (both old and new).

Regional Significance: Giza serves as a gateway to Upper Egypt, making the station a crucial part of the country’s railway system. It connects several key rail lines, including the High Dam-Cairo-Alexandria and Imbaba-Itay El-Baroud (Manashi) routes.

The new Bashteel Station is a cornerstone of Egypt’s ongoing transportation reforms. Its strategic location and expanded capacity will improve rail services for millions of Egyptians, especially those from the southern regions of the country. This station is a significant part of the government's long-term plan to enhance the efficiency, safety, and reach of Egypt’s railways.

In addition to Bashteel Station, other projects, such as the Kafr Dawoud-Sadat rail line and upgrades to the Beni Suef signaling system, are crucial elements in modernizing the country’s transportation network. These initiatives reflect President Sisi’s commitment to improving infrastructure and addressing the demands of a rapidly growing population.
