Pope Francis urged respect for UN peacekeeping forces after the UNIFIL troops in Lebanon were repeatedly targeted by Israeli fire in recent days. He renewed his call for a ceasefire and the pursuit of diplomacy in the Middle East.
During his Sunday Mass in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican, Pope Francis said, "I continue to follow with concern what is happening in the Middle East, and once again call for an immediate ceasefire on all fronts," as reported by the Italian news agency ANSA.
He added, "Let the path of diplomacy and dialogue be taken to achieve peace," expressing his solidarity with "all the affected peoples, including Palestine, Israel, and Lebanon," and calling for respect for UN peacekeeping forces.
