Poland has announced plans to build fortifications along its eastern border this year, as part of a broader strategy to enhance national security.
Deputy Minister of National Defense, Cezary Tomczyk, stated that this initiative dubbed the "Eastern Shield," has been mandated by Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Deputy Prime Minister Kaczyński Kamysz to ensure the safety of the northern border of the Polish Republic.
Tomczyk confirmed that preliminary tests for the Eastern Shield components will commence within the next three weeks at military training facilities, with construction slated to begin later this year.
The project is expected to span nearly 800 kilometers of the eastern and northern borders, with a completion target set for 2028.
The estimated cost of the project is around 10 billion zlotys (about $2.6 billion). This significant investment reflects Poland's commitment to fortifying its borders in response to ongoing migration challenges.
