Egypt's Prime Minister, Mostafa Madbouli, announced on Monday at the World Economic Forum in Riyadh that hosting nine million refugees costs the country $10 billion annually.
According to UNCHR, Egypt is currently hosting over 600,000 registered refugees and asylum-seekers from 62 nationalities, with the Sudanese nationality being the highest followed by Syrians as of October 2023. The other countries of origin include South Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Yemen, Somalia, and Iraq.
Due to the armed conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023, large numbers of civilians have been forced to flee to Egypt and other neighboring countries in search of safety.
