Egypt’s Ministry of Planning and Economic Development launched on Monday a new partnership with United Nations agencies to support the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects.

The launch event was attended by UNCR Elina Panova, General Coordinator of the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects Ambassador Hisham Badr, FAO Representative in Egypt Salah Hajj Hassan, and UN Women Representative Christine Arab.

In his address at the launch, Ambassador Badr said: "We implemented the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects last year to promote clean energy in the country," noting that 162 sustainable projects had participated before being shortlisted to 18 winning projects.

He also explained that the initiative, which is held under the patronage of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, contributes to developing smart and unprecedented solutions to climate problems.

Bader added that the initiative is contributing to the localization of SDGs and raising awareness about the issues of climate change.

He also hailed cooperation with the UN agencies, especially UNDP in supporting the initiative, and conferred words of praise upon the winners and their projects.

In turn, Panova said: "We are happy to cooperate in launching this initiative in collaboration with the national partners."

She also thanked the Egyptian government officials and all those who contributed to the initiative.

Meanwhile, Under-Secrtarey Khaled Mostafa indicated that the initiative aims to spark a green local movement, adding that it focuses on inclusive economic development, empowering women, and supporting climate action.
