The Iraqi Minister of Immigration and Displacement, Evan Faiq, announced today, Thursday, the permanent closure of the Ashti camp (south of Sulaymaniyah Governorate, east of the Iraqi Kurdistan region).
The media office of the Minister of Immigration stated in a statement reported by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that “Minister of Immigration, Evan Faiq, announced the closure of the Ashti camp after the last displaced Iraqi families left.”
Faeq stressed “the importance of this step towards an Iraq free of camps,” indicating that “the remaining displaced people live in the governorates of Erbil and Dohuk, and a committee was formed by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers to discuss mechanisms for closing the camps permanently and providing all necessary facilities for the displaced to return to their original areas.” ".
She continued, "We are working to implement the Council of Ministers' decision to permanently close all camps for the displaced," praising "all officials and security forces in Sulaymaniyah Governorate for cooperating with the Ministry of Immigration to return the displaced."
The Iraqi Minister of Immigration expressed her hope that "there will be cooperation between the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government to close the displaced persons file once and for all."
