Palestinians Split Over UN Plan for Gaza Stabilization Force

Reactions among Palestinians were mixed after the UN Security Council approved a U.S.-drafted resolution to establish an international stabilization force (ISF) in Gaza, according to Xinhua News. The resolution authorizes UN member states and the Board of Peace — the transitional Gaza administration overseeing reconstruction — to form a temporary force in coordination with Egypt and Israel.

Some residents expressed cautious optimism. Mohammed Zarandah from Gaza City described the decision as a positive step that could help end the violence and support rebuilding efforts following two years of war and displacement.

Others voiced serious concerns. Majed Awda from the al-Nuseirat refugee camp warned that deploying a foreign force could create “a bigger problem than the war itself,” arguing that Palestinians should not have outside actors managing their lives or political future.

The Palestinian Authority welcomed the resolution, saying it is prepared to assume full responsibility for governing Gaza within a unified Palestinian framework. It also reiterated its support for stability, reconstruction and the pursuit of a two-state solution.

Hamas rejected the plan, saying it does not meet the political or humanitarian needs of Palestinians and risks placing Gaza under an international trusteeship detached from the rest of Palestinian territory. The Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement also opposed the measure, arguing that any force tasked with disarming resistance factions would inevitably align with Israel’s objectives.

The resolution has therefore deepened divisions among Palestinians, highlighting sharply differing views on whether an international intervention would help restore stability or undermine national sovereignty.
