Several Palestinians were killed and others wounded on Wednesday after an Israeli strike hit tents sheltering displaced families in Deir al-Balah, in the central Gaza Strip, according to local reports.
The attack targeted makeshift shelters housing civilians who had fled earlier bombardments, adding to the growing toll among displaced populations living in overcrowded and precarious conditions across Gaza.
Commenting on broader developments, Osama Qaddan, a senior figure in Fatah, said the reopening of the Rafah Crossing from both sides reflects Egypt’s continued support for the Palestinian people. He stressed that Cairo has maintained a firm position on the Palestinian cause and has consistently rejected any forced displacement of Palestinians.
Qaddan said Israel has effectively paralysed operations at the Rafah Crossing since occupying the city of Rafah in May 2024, sharply restricting the movement of people in and out of Gaza. Speaking in an interview with Extra News, he noted that the current number of departures through the crossing remains very limited.
He added that between 15,000 and 20,000 wounded and injured Palestinians are in urgent need of medical treatment outside Gaza, underscoring ongoing Palestinian demands to expand travel through Rafah to save the lives of patients and the seriously wounded.
Qaddan also praised Egypt’s role in upholding the principle of voluntary return for Palestinians, describing Cairo as a key pillar supporting the Palestinian cause. He said Egypt continues to engage in political and diplomatic efforts with Arab and international partners to defend Palestinian rights and alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
