Police in central Pakistan's Punjab province have developed an electronic system which is known as “The Facial Recognition” for nearly two million people who have criminal records with the police.
The newly introduced system is a new use of artificial intelligence (AI) to reduce crime, officials said Wednesday.
Ihsan Yunus, a police officer, said this technology would help investigators in the province match any image obtained from a crime scene with the two million faces of suspects in the criminal database.
"The use of artificial intelligence will reduce the burden of investigations for policemen," added Yunus, who heads the police information technology unit.
The police will rely on the image captured from the crime scene surveillance cameras, which have been installed in all major cities across Pakistan, as part of a project funded and implemented by China.
It is noteworthy that this is the first time that the police used technology to conduct investigations in Pakistan.
