The Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean expresses its deep concern over the dangerous military escalation taking place in the Middle East, and the serious risks it entails of expanding the scope of the conflict, which could lead to a real danger of the region sliding into a state of comprehensive chaos, with catastrophic repercussions for regional and international security, stability, and peace.
The Assembly affirms that the military approach cannot be a solution to crises; rather, it risks plunging the region into a vicious cycle of chaos and instability. The only viable path to ensuring security and stability lies in a firm commitment to diplomacy and dialogue as the means to resolve the ongoing crises.
The Assembly strongly condemns Iran’s targeting of the territories of Arab states and the violation of their sovereignty, and warns of the grave dangers such actions pose to regional security. It stresses the imperative of respecting the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of these states, upholding the principles of good neighborliness, and fully adhering to the rules of international law and the Charter of the United Nations.
The Assembly calls on all parties to exercise the utmost restraint and to prioritize the language of dialogue and diplomacy, in order to avoid further expansion of the conflict and prevent the region from descending into an uncontrollable spiral of escalation.
The Assembly also urges parliaments, governments, and international organizations to assume their political, moral, and historical responsibilities, and to act urgently to achieve an immediate cessation of all hostile acts, and to return seriously and responsibly to the paths of dialogue and negotiation.
