More than a million people in Germany have signed a petition calling for a nationwide ban on fireworks following widespread disturbances during New Year’s Eve celebrations.

The German Police Union (GdP) in Berlin launched the petition and announced that over 1.01 million people had supported the initiative.

The union described the Platform X petition as a "political mandate" to protect emergency responders and enhance public safety.

The petition reads, “What we witnessed on New Year’s Eve has crossed every boundary. These violent attacks on our colleagues must stop.”

The GdP argued that banning private fireworks displays would be a significant first step toward safeguarding emergency teams during the celebrations.

Despite the public outcry, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, both members of the Social Democratic Party, have voiced opposition to a total ban on fireworks.
