The US State Department announced that more than 17,500 American citizens have returned to the United States from the Middle East since February 28, amid escalating regional tensions.

The update comes as Washington continues to monitor the rapidly evolving security situation in the region following the intensification of military confrontations involving Iran and its adversaries.

In a related development, Barbara Leaf, former US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, said that US President Donald Trump appears determined to continue the current course of action, which includes military deployments and direct strikes targeting Iran.

Speaking in an interview with journalist Amal Al-Hannawi on Al Qahera News, Leaf said current indicators suggest that the US administration intends to maintain this approach in the coming period as tensions continue to escalate.

She noted that Washington’s strategy appears focused on sustaining military pressure while responding to developments on the ground as the confrontation intensifies.
