The world is facing a major water crisis, with a population growing by millions annually, more than doubling the population growth rate of the last century.

As global water use grows, an increasing number of regions are reaching the limit of sustainable water supply, particularly in arid regions.

The world celebrates World Water Day, organized by the United Nations every March 22nd, with a special theme for each year.

The rapid melting of glaciers is creating uncertainty about water flows, with profound impacts for people and the planet.

According to the United Nations, global reductions in carbon emissions and the implementation of local adaptation strategies are essential to the shrinking glaciers.

In 2023, glaciers lost more than 600 gigatons of water, the largest loss of mass recorded in 50 years.

The increasing melting of glaciers is significantly contributing to global sea level rise, with sea level today approximately 20 cm higher than it was in 1900.

On World Water Day, water scarcity threatens the lives of billions of people.

2.4 billion people live in countries suffering from water scarcity.

2.2 billion people lack access to safe water.

703 million people drink unsafe water.

1,000 children die every day from diseases caused by contaminated water.

Causes of water scarcity:

Uncontrolled urbanization.

Rapid population growth.

Pollution.

Climate change.

Scarce availability of fresh water.
