Today, November 11, marks the 20th anniversary of the martyrdom of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.

The late President Yasser Arafat was born in Jerusalem in 1929. His full name is "Muhammad Yasser" Abdul Raouf Daoud Suleiman Arafat Al-Qudwa Al-Husseini. He received his education in Cairo, and as a reserve officer in the Egyptian army, he participated in confronting the tripartite aggression against Egypt in 1956.

Arafat studied at the Faculty of Engineering at Fuad I University in Cairo, and since his youth, he participated in the revival of the Palestinian national movement through his activity in the ranks of the Palestinian Students Union, which he later assumed the presidency of.

He also participated with a group of Palestinian nationalists in establishing the Palestinian National Liberation Movement "Fatah" in the fifties, and became its official spokesman in 1968. He was elected Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization in February 1969, after Ahmed Al-Shuqairi and Yahya Hammouda had previously held the position.

In 1996, Yasser Arafat was elected President of the Palestinian National Authority in a general election.
