Ambassador Amr Aljowaily, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Multilateral Affairs and International Security, stressed that cooperation with the United Nations offices in Egypt aim to achieve tangible projects that directly benefit the Egyptian citizen.
This came in a joint podcast with the United Nations Resident Coordinator Elena Panova on the occasion of United Nations Day. Aljowaily added that Egypt conducts its relationship with the United Nations from a multidimensional perspective, as a forum for developing international rules and formulating global norms, as well as "house of expertise" in which knowledge accumulates from different corners of the world forming a gateway to disseminating best practices and lessons learned.
In this context, Egyptian diplomats are always keen to highlight Egypt's sectoral success stories, especially at the regional level, in addition to their pioneering negotiating contribution.
The Assistant Foreign Minister highlighted Egypt's contribution to strengthening the role of the United Nations in maintaining international peace and security, whether in the conflict resolution pillar represented in the peacemaking, peacekeeping and peacebuilding, fiels in which Egypt led regionally in the Middle East while defending the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the establishment of their independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital; in addition to being a leading country in peacekeeping operations with military, police and civilian components within UN missions, especially in Africa, including the female component, and finally peacebuilding through hosting the African Union Center for Reconstruction and Development in the post-conflict phase.
Ambassador Amr Aljowaily went on to point out Egypt’s contribution to the pillar of international security, considering Egypt's initiative to establish a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East on the one hand, and in international efforts to combat terrorism on the other hand, as it took the initiative during its membership in the Security Council less than 10 years ago when it raised the importance of confronting attempts by terrorist groups to shape the narrative and recruit elements to join them.
Ambassador Amr Aljowaily also discussed the cooperation between Egypt and the specialized UN agencies, referring to the Country Program signed with the UN, and presented Egypt's active participation in various agencies, including but not limited to the World Food Program, the International Telecommunication Union, the World Intellectual Property Organization, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the World Health Organization, and many others. He added that these organizations hold many of their activities, such as regional conferences and workshops, in Egypt, which directly serves the interests of the Egyptian citizen, as well as the Arab and African citizens, in almost daily coordination with technical and sectoral ministries.
