Oman has reaffirmed its solidarity with Kuwait and its sovereign maritime rights, expressing concern over coordinates and maps submitted by Iraq to the United Nations that Muscat said could affect Kuwaiti maritime areas.
In a statement, the Oman Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is closely following developments and stressed the Sultanate’s support for Kuwait’s sovereignty over all its maritime zones and established water elevations.
Muscat urged Iraq to take into account the historical and fraternal relations between the two countries, as well as the principles of good neighbourliness and international law. The ministry also emphasised the importance of adhering to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and respecting the bilateral agreements and memoranda of understanding signed between Kuwait and Iraq.
Separately, Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi held a phone call with Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister to discuss the latest regional developments. Both sides stressed the importance of upholding international law, respecting state sovereignty, and resolving disputes through peaceful means and constructive dialogue.
