An oil spill has been reported in the territorial waters of Iraq following explosions that struck two oil tankers off the Iraqi coast, raising concerns about potential environmental consequences, according to local reports.
The reports said circulating warnings about the possibility of acid rain after the tanker explosions have not yet been confirmed by official sources.
Meanwhile, Iraq Green Observatory suggested that rainfall potentially contaminated by pollutants could occur following the blasts and the resulting oil leak.
Cloud cover increased over Baghdad on Wednesday, but authorities have not linked the weather conditions to the tanker incident or any chemical contamination.
Iraqi authorities are monitoring the situation, and a specialized technical committee has been formed to assess the impact of the spill and explore measures to contain it and limit damage to surrounding waters and the environment.
