The 8th Session of the Islamic Conference of Health Ministers (ICHM), titled: “Health is Our Shared Responsibility”, commenced today, 8 October 2025, in Amman, Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
The conference brought together Ministers of Health, heads of delegations, representatives of international organizations, and OIC institutions for two days of high-level deliberations, technical discussions, adoption of key resolutions and the Amman Declaration to strengthen the health sector in OIC Member States.
The opening session of the conference featured addresses by the outgoing Chair, H.E. Ahmed bin Ali Al Sayegh, Minister of Health and Prevention of the UAE, who reflected on the achievements of the past five years. He handed over the chairmanship to H.E. Dr. Ibrahim Bdour, Minister of Health of Jordan, who emphasised the importance of joint Islamic action within the framework of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation to address key challenges in the health sector.
On his part, the OIC Secretary-General, H.E. Hissein Brahim Taha, represented by H.E. Ambassador Aftab Ahmad Khokher, Assistant Secretary-General for Science and Technology, reaffirmed that health remains a high priority for the OIC, not only as a basic human right but as a central pillar for prosperity and sustainable development.
The Secretary-General highlighted the support from key Member States, including the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the Republic of Türkiye, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Republic of Indonesia, and the State of Kuwait, as instrumental to the success of various OIC health initiatives in the Least Developed Member States.
The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), H.E. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, in his recorded message, appreciated the OIC’s partnership in tackling challenges in the global health sector.
A high-level panel during the conference focused on building equitable and resilient health systems for universal health coverage (UHC) and health security, emphasizing the need for sustainable financing and innovation in public health infrastructure.
The conference will conclude tomorrow with the adoption of reports, resolutions and the Amman Declaration.
