The US embassy in Sudan announced Monday that the decision to cancel Sudan's designation as a state sponsor of terrorism will take effect today.

In a statement on its Facebook page, the embassy said: "The 45-day congressional notification period has expired. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo signed a notice stating that the cancellation of Sudan's designation as a state sponsor of terrorism is effective as of December 14, to be published in the Federal Register."

Last October, the US House of Representatives received a notification from the administration of outgoing President Donald Trump to remove Khartoum from the list of countries sponsoring terrorism.

Washington took the decision to put Sudan on the list, during Omar Al-Bashir's rule, after it accused him of harboring local and international terrorists, including the former leader of Al Qaeda, Osama bin Laden.

However, this year, the White House announced Trump's intention to inform Congress of removing Khartoum from the list of countries sponsoring terrorism.

Khartoum decided to pay $ 335 million to a suspended fund to compensate the families of victims of terrorism.

While Trump urged Congress to pass legislation to activate the removal of Khartoum from the list.
