Former U.S. President Barack Obama denounced the Texas shooting that killed more than a dozen children, affirming that “it’s long past time for action” on gun violence.

In a series of tweets, Obama said he and his wife Michelle were angry for the families of the victims. The former First Lady later retweeted his post.

“Nearly ten years after Sandy Hook — and ten days after Buffalo — our country is paralyzed,” he wrote, “not by fear, but by a gun lobby and a political party that have shown no willingness to act in any way that might help prevent these tragedies.”

He continued, “It’s long past time for action, any kind of action. And it’s another tragedy—a quieter but no less tragic one—for families to wait another day.”

On Tuesday, a teenage gunman in Texas killed 18 students and a teacher at an elementary school near San Antonio in what would be one of the deadliest mass shootings at a school in U.S. history.

Officials revealed that the the18-year-old gunman was killed by police in response to the shooting and acted alone.
