A senior US official stated on Tuesday that President Donald Trump has no plans to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in the immediate future, despite earlier reports suggesting a possible summit in Budapest within the next two weeks.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official said, “There is currently no scheduled meeting between President Trump and President Putin,” according to AFP.
CNN also reported that the expected Trump-Putin summit is now "facing delays." The two leaders were reportedly due to meet in Budapest to discuss potential diplomatic solutions to the ongoing war in Ukraine. However, those plans now appear to be on hold.
Preliminary diplomatic efforts between Washington and Moscow have also been affected. According to CNN, a planned meeting between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has been suspended for the time being.
Last Thursday, Trump revealed after a phone call with Putin that both leaders had agreed to arrange high-level talks between their senior advisors during the following week. While that conversation raised hopes for a breakthrough, recent developments suggest momentum has slowed.
Observers now await further clarity on whether the proposed talks — aimed at defusing tensions and potentially advancing a path to peace in Ukraine — will be rescheduled or abandoned altogether.
