Nigeria has levied a substantial fine of $220 million (€202 million) against Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, for breaches of antitrust, data protection, and consumer rights laws.
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) accused Meta of discriminatory practices, market dominance abuse, unauthorized sharing of personal data, and denying Nigerians control over their data.
This conclusion follows a comprehensive 38-month investigation initiated in May 2021.
FCCPC's CEO, Adamu Abdullahi, highlighted that the investigation revealed Meta's invasive practices against Nigerian data subjects.
He emphasized that Meta must comply with existing laws and cease exploiting Nigerian consumers and their data.
The commission mandated that Meta halt any future practices that fail to meet national standards.
Despite Meta's awareness of the ongoing investigation and its proposed remedy package, the FCCPC found the measures insufficient to address the concerns.
Meta has yet to respond to requests for comment from news agencies.
