In a significant development, China announced on Monday that it has approved the resumption of commercial flights with North Korea, a route that had been suspended since 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Wang Wenbin, the spokesperson for China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that "the Chinese side has agreed to the flight plans of North Korea's Air Koryo for the Pyongyang-Beijing and Beijing-Pyongyang routes."
Since early 2020, North Korea has largely remained cut off from the outside world, as it closed its borders to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
It had been scheduled that the North Korean airline, Air Koryo, would operate its first commercial flight in over three years on Monday.
However, this flight was unexpectedly canceled at the last moment.
