North Korea promised, on Sunday, to expand and boost relations with Russia on the eve of the third anniversary of a summit between leader Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

April 25 this year marks the third anniversary of the summit, which was held in Russia's Far East city of Vlapostok in 2019. The North stressed the friendly ties with Russia amid rising tensions between Moscow and Washington in the wake of Ukraine's invasion.

"Today, the DPRK-Russia relations, even in the face of challenges and pressure of the U.S. and its vassal forces, continue to develop and strengthen ... and are contributing to ensuring peace and security in the region and to establishing the international order based on independence and justice," the North's foreign ministry said in an article posted on its website.

"It is an invariable stand of the DPRK government to expand and develop in all fields the friendly and cooperative relations with Russia, our friend and friendly neighbour, according to the agreement reached the historic DPRK-Russia summit meeting," the ministry said.

North Korea has previously slammed U.S. President Joe Biden, calling him an “old man in his senility” after he accused Putin of war crimes in Ukraine.

“The latest story is the US chief executive who spoke ill of the Russian president with groundless data,” said a commentary carried by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). “Such reckless remarks can be made only by the descendants of Yankees, master hand at aggression and plot-breeding.”
