Russia has announced that it does not recognize the decisions of the International Criminal Court (ICC), in light of reports indicating that the court is in the process of issuing arrest warrants against Russian figures and opening an investigation into war crimes, according to the Guardian newspaper.

Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin, said in statements that his country does not recognize the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court - which is based in The Hague - after reports were received that the court would soon issue arrest warrants against Russian figures in connection with the Ukraine war.

According to the report, the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court is set to open an official investigation into two cases of war crimes in Ukraine.

Arrest warrants will be issued for many Russian figures suspected of involvement in those crimes, which include the destruction of infrastructure in Ukraine.

In the event that the court issues these warrants, it will be the first time of its kind that the international court issues arrest warrants in connection with the war in Ukraine.
