More than 24 people were killed in Ukraine’s Kherson region following a Ukrainian drone attack that struck a hotel, according to local Russian-appointed officials, amid rising tensions at the start of the new year.

The mayor of the region said the death toll had exceeded 24, though he noted that the figure had not yet been officially confirmed. The attack reportedly occurred just hours after the beginning of the New Year.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a “terrorist and inhumane act.” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Moscow would pursue accountability for all those responsible, vowing that the perpetrators would not escape punishment.

Russian lawmakers also reacted sharply to the strike. Members of the State Duma accused European leaders who support Ukraine of having “blood on their hands,” claiming their backing contributes to civilian casualties.

Meanwhile, the Federation Council, chaired by Valentina Matviyenko, said Russia would continue providing support to residents of the Kherson region, adding that the attack undermines ongoing efforts toward negotiations.

Russian officials suggested the incident could harden Moscow’s position in any future talks, signaling that flexibility in negotiations may become increasingly unlikely following the attack.
