At least 130 fighters of the al-Shabab movement were killed in Somalia clashes, according to the country's defence ministry.
"The battle took place in the village of Elhareri in the central province of Hiran," Somali Defence Minister Abdullahi Mohamed Noor said on Friday.
Noor added that the area around the village is now back under government control.
The government in Mogadishu has been enacting a military offensive against al-Shabab for several months.
Last Saturday, two vehicle bomb explosions that targeted the building housing the country's education ministry killed at least 100 people and wounded more than 300 others.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud told the media that the number of dead is expected to climb.
A number of government buildings, hotels, and eateries are located close to the explosion site.
