Yesterday, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi honored winning athletic teams at African, world tournaments, as they raised the name of Egypt high in the international forums.
The teams are Egypt's U23 national football team, the national Karate team, the Squash team, as well as the Paralympic team.
In my view, it is an important step for the Egyptian sport and its renaissance as paying attention to various ignored sports is one of the most important steps in the progress of sport in Egypt.
We were all so happy last month when Egypt won the 2019 Total U-23 Africa Cup of Nations and our team qualified to Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Moreover, the whole world noticed our competence in the squash in which Egypt is ranked first globally, in what looked like a sports miracle, reported by international newspapers.
The New York Times published a lengthy report on its website, saying that squash is the most successful game in Egypt, while its players control the game completely while the four players ranked first globally are Egyptians, moreover, there are five other Egyptians among the top 20, in addition, since 2003 an Egyptian won the men's world championship 10 times.
What pleased me in the report is that the women participated in the domination of the squash game, as they dominated the playing field. The top four female squash players out of 5 are Egyptians. While Egyptian player Nour El Sherbiny was ranked first after beating World No.1 Raneem El Welily last month at PSA World Championship Final held in front of the Grand Pyramid of Giza to won the title for the fourth time.
The Paralympic team achieved the miracles winning the third place for men and the third place for women as well in weightlifting. the team also won the first place in Team Mix Event.
The Olympic team, under the leadership of its national coach, Shawky Gharib, won the African Nations Cup in Egypt for the first time. Ramadan Subhi, the team leader, won the best player award, while Mustafa Muhammad, the striker of the team, won the championship top goalscorer award with 4 goals. Goalkeeper Mohamed Sobhi won the best Goalkeeper award, while the team received the fair play award.
We have, then, a sporting renaissance after a partial return of the fans that we saw yesterday supporting Al-Ahly club, and we hope the return of fans in all matches and championships.
Today we are witnessing a new policy to motivate stars in all sports that lived in darkness, but their players worked in silence and won tournaments calmly, raising the flag of Egypt and its name high.
