Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates, Dr. Badr Abdelatty, met on Friday, September 5, with the President of the Cypriot House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou.

During the meeting, Minister Abdelatty commended the historic Egyptian–Cypriot relations and praised the numerous high-level visits between the two countries, the most recent of which was the visit of the President of the Cypriot House of Representatives to Egypt last February. He expressed Egypt’s keenness to increase the pace of parliamentary visits, as well as related contacts and joint activities, noting that parliamentary cooperation represents an important dimension in advancing bilateral relations to broader horizons. He also highlighted the shared desire to enhance and develop joint cooperation and expressed aspiration for the continued support of Cypriot members of the European Parliament in facilitating the disbursement of the second tranche of the €4 billion package.

Minister Abdelatty also expressed his aspiration for further bilateral cooperation, particularly in the fields of energy, labor, investment, trade, tourism, education, health, information technology, agriculture, irrigation and water resources, fisheries, and cultural affairs. He highlighted the importance of strengthening economic and investment cooperation between the two countries and increasing the volume of trade exchange, welcoming the convening of the Egypt–Cyprus–Greece Economic Forum, held in Cairo in January 2025, to promote economic, investment, and trade cooperation. The Foreign Minister also underscored the strategic importance of the energy file in the Eastern Mediterranean and the significance of the electricity interconnection project, in addition to the importance Egypt attaches to implementing the memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the employment of Egyptian labor in Cyprus and the aspiration to expand it to cover various sectors, such as hospitality and tourism, as well as construction and building.

On another front, the meeting addressed regional developments, particularly the situation in Gaza. Minister Abdelatty reviewed Egypt’s intensive efforts to achieve a ceasefire and ensure the entry of humanitarian aid, stressing the important role of European parliaments in supporting the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and the need to sustain this stance, which is grounded in the principles of the United Nations Charter and relevant UN Security Council resolutions. He briefed the Cypriot official on the vision for the international conference on early recovery and reconstruction, which Egypt intends to host in cooperation with the Palestinian Authority and the UN once a ceasefire is reached. He also underlined Egypt’s categorical rejection of plans to displace Palestinians from their land, the expansion of Israeli military operations in Gaza, as well as illegal practices in the West Bank and illegitimate settlement schemes, stressing that the two-state solution and the establishment of a Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 lines constitute the only path to achieving a just and comprehensive peace in the region.

For her part, the President of the Cypriot House of Representatives praised her visit to Egypt last February and the honor of meeting with the President of the Republic, affirming her keenness to continue working to strengthen bilateral relations in light of the special ties between the two countries.
