Mexican authorities have deployed 10,000 troops to the western state of Jalisco in an attempt to contain a wave of violence that erupted following the death of Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera, known as "El Mencho," in a military operation.

The Mexican military announced that Oseguera was wounded during an operation in the Tabalpa area of Jalisco and died while being transported by air to Mexico City. His death was followed by an outbreak of attacks and violence attributed to members of the cartel in approximately 20 states.

According to the Mexican government, about 25 security personnel, including National Guard members and a prosecutor's office employee, were killed, along with 30 cartel gunmen, during clashes that followed the military operation. A woman was also killed in the violence.

In Jalisco, gunmen blocked major roads using burning vehicles, while shops and schools closed in Guadalajara, the country's second-largest city, where the streets appeared less crowded amid fears of escalating unrest.

Security Minister Omar Garcia Harfuch said authorities had sent an additional 2,500 troops to Jalisco, bringing the number of forces deployed in the state to 10,000 since Sunday.
