A massive explosion took place in an area occupied by gas installations in Afghanistan's western Herat province, Afghan officials said on Saturday.

The Tolo news TV, quoted these officials as saying, "The explosion caused a massive fire," affirming that efforts are being exerted to extinguish the fire. The channel did not provide any further details.

On the other hand, nine Afghan border force members were killed in separate attacks by Taliban militants in the Herat province.

Taliban militants launched vicious attacks on two Afghan border force outposts near the border with Iran in the Kohsan and Ghoryan districts Thursday night, the Tolo news TV reported.

“Nine border troops were killed and over one dozen others taken hostages by the militants after both outposts fell into the Taliban’s control, following the heavy overnight clashes,” the report indicated.

The province witnessed fierce clashes in recent years, with more violence seen in spring and summer commonly known as fighting season in Afghanistan.
