Australian actress and producer Margot Robbie has shared an update about her upcoming female-led spin-off of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Robbie opened up about the long-gestating project and explained that it was in development with her attached to star for quite a while.

"We had an idea and were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led — not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story — which we thought would’ve been really cool," Robbie noted.

The actress disclosed that Disney seemed not to like the plans and didn't want to do it.

The project was first announced in June 2020. The project would've seen Robbie reuniting with Christina Hodson, the screenwriter for "Birds of Prey", who was also set to write the spinoff.

The franchise has grossed over $4.5 billion for Disney beginning with 2003's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl".

The blockbuster hit spawned multiple sequels, such as 2006's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest", 2007's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End", 2011's "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides", and 2017's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales".

All movies starred Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, with Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Geoffrey Rush, Javier Bardem, and Penélope Cruz costarring in the franchise.

Robbie previously starred in high-profile female-led tentpole projects, including DC's "Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey".

The perceived financial shortcomings of the projects may have played a part in Disney's decision to not move forward with Robbie's take on the franchise.

However, the actress still has quite a bit on her plate, with the hotly-anticipated "Babylon" set to hit theaters Dec. 23, the long-awaited "Barbie" movie coming out in July 2023, and an Ocean's Eleven prequel in the works with director Jay Roach.
