At a time when the Islamic world faces mounting challenges, Malaysia continues to stand out as a leading nation in promoting moderation, coexistence, and justice; particularly through its unwavering support for the Palestinian cause.

The Malaysian government has been at the forefront of efforts to strengthen Islamic values, foster harmony in its multi-religious and multi-ethnic society, and advocate for the rights of oppressed peoples across the globe.

In this context, Sada El Balad English Website "SEE" conducted an exclusive interview with Malaysian Minister of Religious Affairs, Dr. Mohd Na’im Mokhtar, who outlined his country’s vision for advancing Islamic values, reaffirming Malaysia’s steadfast commitment to Palestine.

He also highlighted the importance of Islamic cooperation, and discussed the challenges and future of religious work in Malaysia.

Here's the full extract of the interview:

**Sada El Balad**: Dr. Mohd Na’im, Malaysia is frequently cited as an example of moderate Islam and religious openness. What is Malaysia’s vision for fostering Islamic values in society?

**Minister**: Malaysia believes that the noble values of Islam are the foundation for a strong, cohesive society. Our focus has always been on moderation, coexistence, and peace among all segments of the community. We base our strategy on the Quran and Sunnah, which underpin the ethics that inspire rejecting extremism and fanaticism. Therefore, we implement multiple programs promoting Quranic ethics, national and international Quran competitions, and encourage exchanges with imams and preachers from brotherly countries.

**Sada El Balad **: Where does the Palestinian cause stand among Malaysia’s official priorities?

**Minister**: The Palestinian cause is at the heart of the Islamic world, and Malaysia has consistently maintained unwavering support. Recently, we outlined seven primary decisions within the Malaysian Islamic Advisory Council, most notably our ongoing condemnation of crimes against humanity in Gaza and Palestine, as well as our calls for full protection of all humanitarian institutions there. Malaysia’s leadership and citizens remain committed to solidarity and advocacy for Palestinian rights, regardless of international pressure.

**Sada El Balad **: What practical steps has Malaysia taken to support Palestine recently?

**Minister**: We have organized mass rallies under the slogan "Solidarity for Palestine and Gaza" in Kuala Lumpur, attended by government ministers and representatives from all societal sectors. We have formally called for condemnation of crimes against children, women, and civilians, and demanded the protection of hospitals, schools, and humanitarian institutions in Palestine. Malaysia has also doubled humanitarian assistance to RM200 million in 2025, and continues to mobilize donations and support at both governmental and popular levels.

**Sada El Balad **: How crucial is regional and international Islamic cooperation for Malaysia, especially in today’s challenging landscape?

**Minister**: Islamic cooperation is paramount, especially in confronting extremism and groups that misrepresent the spirit of Islam. Malaysia relies on memoranda of understanding with Saudi Arabia and fellow Islamic nations to advance joint activities such as Quran competitions, visits by imams and scholars, and sharing institutional expertise in raising religious awareness and maintaining Islamic identity.

**Sada El Balad **: Malaysia is often praised for balancing religious and ethnic pluralism. How do you harmonize this with strengthening Islamic identity?

**Minister**: Malaysia is a global model for pluralism, embracing a moderate approach that respects diversity and fosters mutual respect among all religions. The strength of our society arises from a commitment to faith that blends harmoniously with global values. Our ministry’s educational and awareness programs in schools and mosques help nurture this balance and ensure sustainable social cohesion.

**Sada El Balad **: Malaysia regularly hosts international religious delegations. How do such visits shape the country’s Islamic image locally and abroad?

**Minister**: These visits reinforce Malaysia’s role as a leader in the global Islamic community. We welcome imams from the Grand Mosques and heads of religious organizations, and participate actively in international Islamic forums. Such outreach strengthens Malaysia’s reputation for promoting the true, moderate image of Islam worldwide.

**Sada El Balad **: Finally, what message do you have regarding the future of religious work in Malaysia and upcoming challenges?

**Minister**: The challenges are significant, particularly with the rise of extremism globally. However, Malaysia remains committed to strengthening awareness and religious programs, and to continuously supporting Palestine, keeping pace with evolving strategies to uplift Muslim communities with the spirit of moderation. I call on all Malaysians to uphold moderation and to unite in the service of Islam and humanitarian causes.
