France’s President Emmanuel Macron has postponed a state visit to Germany scheduled for July 2-4 due to protests in his country.
This was announced today, Saturday, by the office of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and the office added in a statement that Macron called Steinmeier today and briefed him on the situation in the country.
President Macron requested a postponement of a state visit that was scheduled for Germany, according to the statement.
The statement noted that Steinmeier regretted Macron's decision, but said he fully understood it in light of the protests. The statement stressed that the visit should take place in the near future.
It stressed that the German president is "closely following the developments" in France, and "hopes that the violence on the streets of French cities will stop as soon as possible and that peace will return to society again."
The French president was supposed to visit Germany at the invitation of his German counterpart.
According to the German side, the visit program included negotiations with Steinmeier, with Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and participation in a number of joint activities.
This would have been the first state visit by a French president to Germany in 23 years.
