Firefighters, soldiers and civilian volunteers are battling blazes in forests across northern Algeria which have now claimed many lives.
Massive fire spread across 17 provinces on Wednesday, emergency services spokesman Nassim Barnaoui told reporters.
The death toll has reached at least 69 people, including 28 soldiers. The mountainous mainly Berber region of Kabylie, east of the capital Algiers, has been the worst hit.
Accordingly, the government has deployed the army to help fight the fires, which have burnt most fiercely in the mountainous Kabylie region.
On his part, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune declared three days of national mourning for the dead and froze state activities not related to the fires.
