English Premier League club Liverpool officially announced the signing of German international Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen during the current summer transfer window.

The club stated, “Liverpool Football Club has reached an agreement for the transfer of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen.”

The statement added, “The 22-year-old playmaker has signed a long-term contract with the Reds after agreeing to personal terms and successfully completing his medical. Wirtz becomes the latest addition to Arne Slot’s squad this summer and will reunite with his former Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong.”

According to media reports, the deal cost Liverpool €125 million, making it the most expensive transfer in Premier League history.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Wirtz said, “I’m absolutely thrilled and immensely proud. It’s finally done—I’ve been waiting for this for a long time, and I’m very happy.”

He continued, “I’m really excited to start a new adventure. This was one of my top priorities: I wanted to try something completely different—leaving the Bundesliga and joining the Premier League.”

He added, “I’ll see how I perform there. I hope to give it my all. I also spoke with some players who’ve played there, and they told me it’s perfect for me. Every stadium is incredible, and you can enjoy every single match. I can’t wait to play my first game.”

Wirtz is regarded as one of football’s top young talents. He arrives in Merseyside after five and a half highly successful seasons with Leverkusen, following his move from Cologne’s youth team.

He made his Bundesliga debut in May 2020, at just 17 years and 15 days old, and scored his first senior goal just weeks later—against Bayern Munich.
