The National Oil Corporation in Libya declared force majeure and third-degree (maximum) emergency after a number of tanks at the Zawiya refinery were severely damaged in the early hours of this morning, causing fires due to gunfire and clashes between armed groups in the vicinity using light and medium weapons.
The corporation confirmed in a statement issued Sunday, as reported by the Libyan News Agency, that security and safety personnel were able to control the fires and leaks in the gas lines and limit the risk of their spread despite the ongoing clashes in the vicinity of the refinery.
The Board of Directors of the National Oil Corporation in Libya called on the relevant institutions and parties to assume their responsibilities and move as quickly as possible to stop the clashes and spare the oil sites from the ongoing conflict, regardless of its causes.
The statement also called on the Government of National Unity to intervene to resolve the clashes and eliminate sedition in any form, given the great danger it poses due to the flammable materials contained in these tanks.
