Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam affirmed on Wednesday that Lebanon welcomes Egyptian mediation aimed at calming escalating tensions on the border with Israel, stressing the importance of diplomatic efforts to avoid escalation and protect stability in southern Lebanon.
On the other hand, the Lebanese Prime Minister said that economic talks would be part of any potential normalization process with Israel, but would not take place before a formal peace agreement is reached. He added, "If Israel and the Arab states adhere to the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative, normalization will follow, but we are still far from achieving that at the moment."
Salam affirmed that Lebanon is committed to its national and sovereign rights, and supports any Arab or international initiative based on international legitimacy resolutions and the principles of justice and fairness in resolving the conflict.
