A diplomatic source told "Reuters" on Monday that the Syrian government cancelled a visit scheduled for Wednesday for a Lebanese delegation to Damascus to discuss the demarcation of the maritime border between the two countries.

The source added that the Syrian government sent a letter on Monday to the Lebanese Foreign Ministry saying that the time was not appropriate for such a visit.

A Lebanese official said, on Saturday, that President Michel Aoun and his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad discussed demarcating the maritime borders between their two countries, before a visit by a Lebanese delegation charged with negotiating the matter to Damascus in the coming days.

After Saturday's talks, the Lebanese official added, "Michel Aoun told Bashar al-Assad that Lebanon is keen to start negotiations with Syria to demarcate the northern maritime borders."

The official stated that "Aoun then assigned the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Elias Bou Saab, who negotiated on behalf of Lebanon regarding the indirect talks with Israel, to head a delegation that will go to Damascus in the coming days to start the discussions."
