The government's department for sport in Spain on Friday said that La Liga season is set to restart on June after being suspended for three months due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement, the government's department for sport said that it has decided to resume the season June 11 with the local derby between Sevilla and Real Betis.

"The season will end by July 19, depending on the evolution of the pandemic," the statement added, according to Reuters.

On March 23, La Liga and the Spanish soccer federation (RFEF)  suspended all domestic sporting events in the country until further notice.

All sports events in Spain had been postponed on March 12 for two weeks because of the spread of coronavirus but was initially due to resume on April 3.

In a joint statement, the two bodies have agreed on suspending all the competitions, including La Liga,  until the Spanish government considered they could start again “without creating any health risk”.

“Both the RFEF and LaLiga wish to express our greatest public gratitude to all those who are dedicating their best efforts to provide essential services to the Spanish people,” the statement added.
