President of Republic of Korea Lee Jae Myung said on Thursday cooperation between his country and Egypt is strong and based on mutual respect, adding that Seoul is keen to further strengthen ties with Cairo within the coming period.

Speaking at a joint press conference with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, Lee said the two countries are working together to promote peace in the region and globally.

He expressed appreciation for the warm welcome and hospitality he received during his visit to Egypt, noting that the trip coincides with the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, a milestone he described as highly significant in the trajectory of bilateral cooperation.

Lee said Egypt and the Republic of Korea, despite their geographic distance, have built a close partnership over decades based on mutual respect and trust across various fields, including the economy, education and culture.

He said he reviewed with President Sisi the course of bilateral relations over the past three decades, noting that both sides agreed to launch a new phase of cooperation aimed at achieving peace, prosperity and cultural renaissance in the future.

The President of the Republic of Korea said the two sides also agreed to strengthen the foundations of development cooperation for future generations and to expand their global cultural presence as two prominent cultural powers.

He stressed that Egypt and the Republic of Korea are determined to contribute jointly to international peace, including supporting stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the Middle East.

Lee said the two leaders held in-depth discussions on recent developments on the Korean Peninsula and in the region. He praised President Sisi’s full support for the government of the Republic of Korea's efforts to open a new era of peace, cooperation and shared growth on the peninsula.

He also voiced deep appreciation for Egypt’s efforts toward a ceasefire and reconstruction in the Gaza Strip and its support for peace efforts in the region, affirming his government’s commitment to continue working with Egypt to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Lee noted that the two countries agreed to continue strengthening joint solidarity, support each other's roles in advancing peace on the Korean Peninsula and in the region, and work together to uphold international peace and stability.
