The Korean Cultural Center (KCC) in Egypt held a special lecture on Korean cuisine in the closing ceremony of the ‘2023 Korean Cuisine Academy’.
The lecture which has been presented by Korean chef Hong Seng Hee, an expert in dietetics, tackled the history of the Korean fermented foods and their health benefits. Korean Chef said that Korean people have traditionally had a healthy diet as they have followed a fermented-foods for thousands of years.
she provided recipes of some fermented dishes including Kimchi, the most famous traditional fermented vegetable dish in South Korea.
Later, the Korean chef introduced alive food demonstration where she offered detailed step-by-step cooking instructions for 3 dishes including Bibimbap, Korean dish that consists of mixed ingredients including rice, vegetables, meat, Teok-galbi, minced meat mixed with rice cake, vegetables, and Geotjeori, type of Kimchi.
About 30 professional chefs from the Egyptian Chefs Association and some journalists attended the event lasted for 3 hours. Participants had a chance to taste all three dished presented in the demonstration.
Chef Sarah Talaat, Member of the Egyptian Chefs Association expressed his appreciation for organizing the event saying that she became very much interested in discovering more about Korea’s food and culture.
Ashraf Gamal, Executive Director of the Egyptian Chefs Association added that in terms mixing culture, Bibimbap is similar to the Egyptian Koshari. He called for organizing joint events in the future to highlight the similarities between the food culture in Egypt and South Korea.
The 4-week Korean cuisine course has received a great enthusiasm from the Egyptian audience and professionals. 130 people attended the classes instructed by the Korean chef Hong Seng Hee.
The K-Food Academy, one of the most popular events held by the KCC, provides an opportunity for participants to discover authentic Korean cuisine, the distinctive symbol of the Korean culture.
Oh Sungho, Director of the Korean Cultural Center said that Korean food seems to be gaining popularity in Egypt especially among young generations, influenced by Korean pop culture, music, TV dramas and movies.
He added that the KCC will continue its role in enhancing the cultural exchange between the peoples of the two countries through organizing various cultural events that cover all components of the Korean Culture.
