Mayor of Karbala Abeer Salim Al-Khafaji in the southwest of the capital Iraq, Baghdad, died after being shot by gunmen on Tuesday.

“Al-Khafaji was killed by gunmen while overseeing the city’s campaign accompanied by security forces to stop the violations that took place in the Al-Mamlji area,” the Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported.
A security source revealed that Al-Khafaji was shot along with two city government employees by people who opposed disclosing of offences.
The incident took place on Al-Hur Street near Al-Safwa College in the residential neighborhood of Al-Zahraa, according to the source.
Meanwhile, the Governor of Holy Karbala, Nassif Al-Khattabi, announced on Wednesday the arrest of the mayor's killer.
On his part, Minister of Interior Othman Al-Ghanimi directed the competent authorities to detain the policemen who were accompanying the late Director of the Holy Karbala Municipality.
