Award-winning actor Johnny Depp spoke for the first time about being boycotted by Hollywood as his latest movie "Minamata" has yet to be released in the United States.

In a new interview with The Sunday Times, Depp opened up about the surreal five years he has experienced during his fallout from the Hollywood community.

The actor portrays W Eugene Smith, an American photojournalist who helped expose the devastating impact of mercury poisoning on coastal communities in Japan in the 1970s.

In the wake of losing Depp losing a libel case against British tabloid "The Sun", which referred to the actor as a “wife-beater” in an article about him and his former wife Amber Heard, MGM shelved the release of the Andrew Levitas-directed movie. He was also forced to exit Warner Bros' Fantastic Beasts franchise last year.

The actor also commented about his fall from Hollywood graces and described it as "an absurdity of media mathematics".

"Hollywood’s boycott of me? One man, one actor in an unpleasant and messy situation, over the last number of years?” Depp noted.

Despite the libel case causing a series of problems for the star, he still had his supporters in the industry.

The San Sebastian and Karlovy Vary Film Festivals recently announced it would honor Depp.

The San Sebastian Film Festival announced that it would honor the acclaimed actor with its Donostia Award, a lifetime achievement honor that recognizes outstanding contributions to the film world.

On the other hand, the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival will celebrate the star as well as recognize and pay tribute to his extensive career and lasting legacy on the film industry globally.
