French police have confirmed that thieves in northern France carried out a high-value jewelry robbery estimated at up to $1.2 million.
According to police reports, the burglars broke into a jewelry shop in central Roubaix, near Lille, on Wednesday. The thieves briefly detained the jeweler and his wife before escaping with a collection of valuable items. Authorities estimate the stolen jewelry to be worth between 500,000 and one million euros, equivalent to roughly 580,000 to 1.2 million dollars.
Police have launched a full investigation into kidnapping, organized crime activity, and armed extortion linked to the incident.
In a separate event on the same day, several individuals used explosives to break into the main post office in Roubaix, targeting its cash safe. They fled with a bag found inside the safe, which was later discovered to contain only empty envelopes. Police detained six suspects later that evening.
These two robberies come shortly after a high-profile daylight raid last month, when a criminal gang stormed the Louvre Museum in Paris and stole jewelry valued at approximately $102 million.
